Never heard of that - the idea of being able to create a mode from
some kind of higher-level description of the syntax would be great.

Look at the sources to many of Tim's modules: they're essentially
parameterised at build time. You may find some mileage here. I can't
recall any specific modules as I've not used or hacked on Zap in a
decade, but looking around at a bunch of them should reveal tables of
keywords towards the end.
