I have found some quite sensible example code at Pinknoise

It comes with a lot of clear comment and looks like exactly the
kind of thing I need.

You do know about the nested WIMP?

Heard of it, but do not know it. From what I've heard of it, I don't
like it.

- I think it encourages the construction of scrolling pane windows,
which I really, really, *really* hate.

You must have a very good reason. The rest of us like the fact that it
handles pane windows for us rather than everyone implementing the same old
code themselves.

- I think it encourages the construction of 'lots of documents under
one big main window', a style of managing multiple documents which is
imitated from Windows, and a style I also hate.

Not at all. It's up to you the programmer to decide what you make of its
features.

- It is hardly documented (it's not in any PRM I have seen).

Have a read, you might like it after all.

- And finally, I'm not sure what version of RISC OS is minimaly
required (or what version of which modules). I'd like my applications
to be able to run on an as old a RISC OS version as I can (while at the
same time staying compatible with recent incarnations).

Any version of RISC OS. It's the WindowManager you have to check; version
3.97 or later. Pretty much everyone should be using that anyway.

All the above arguments may be merely a result of my ignorance about
the ins and outs of the nested WIMP, but if people have solid
refutations to offer, I'm willing to listen.

Possibly. If I were you, I'd hold off forming any strong opinions one way or
the other until you've read the spec.

Steve
