Well, it hasn't done it again, so it's hard to say.... Would it be
possible to make the relevant display icon a little longer? Since it
only shows the right-hand end of the string, depending on your desktop
font you can lose about half the display!

I'm not sure I understand - this sounds like normal menu behaviour, i.e.
you use the scrollbar to scroll the menu. Are you expecting it to
move up of its own accord when you approach the bottom of the screen?
In any case, in practical terms almost any menu that is taller than the
entire screen is *too long* from a user interface point of view. :-(
(The only semi-valid exception to this I can think of is font menus -
and a font menu that extends off the bottom of the screen is not very
usable in practice.)

Limit it to the subset of a dozen or so countries actually containing

(Mainly Benelux, Germany and the Commonwealth, so far as I can tell....)
