A week or so ago Messenger/SpamStamp froze whilst d/loading a *very* large
message with images attached. Eventually I found the file which was
responsible and *moved* it out of the folder it was in (in !NewsDir). Upnext
on shutting the RPC down, next bootup didn't!... with dreaded 'Is it
formatted' message for HardDisc4. After initial panic, I found DiscKnight,
ran it and it repaired my hard drive, finding various errors; The drive now
boots perfectly but...
It looks to me as though the disc issues have resulted in some file
corruption specifically related to !Printers and the network software.
DiscKnight has repaired the disc structure, but it may not have
repaired the file contents.
That would be my guess. Was there anything in $.Lost+Found? If there
wasn't a Lost+Found, did you follow the instructions of rebooting
after the repair? If not try it again.
After the panic, I took a series of back-ups, in the following order:
You need to backup *before* a crash not after, as you don't know what
may have been damaged, unless you can compare it with a prior backup.
I think I would first try replacing !Printers with a virgin copy from
the installation CD, or a downloaded copy of the universal boot. This
would be fairly simple.
I would suggest that.
Replacing the network software would, for me, be harder, because I
can't remember where it all lives.
Don't forget to replace the bits in Choices as well - that is a likely
place for the errors to be located.
The more drastic, and safer, alternative, is to rename !Boot to
!Boot-old, and install a new empty !Boot from installation CD or
download. Then migrate one piece at a time from your old !Boot,
testing as you go.
If you can't determine its current state, that is a safe option.
