I open the NEW option in LanMan98, enter the details and click connect.
After a few seconds I get the error message 'Timed out while
connecting'.

I have entered the name of the new computer in the Hosts file and
checked
the connections
using the Ping option, all ok with no loss.

Is there anything else I should have done or can anyone offer any
advice.

Points to check

Can you ping the other machines from the new PC?

Can you ping the new PC from the other machines? If so, the firewall
is at least partly correct.

Does the firewall allow incoming connections from your local network?
- if not, change it so it does.

Have you enabled file sharing?

Are you sharing at least one folder, with user read permission?

The easiest one to set up is Shared Documents.

Thank you for this information.

Pinging ok on each computer all ways.
Firewall enabled correctly.
File sharing enabled.
I cannot share any folder on the new PC with the Risc PC.

I suspect that the Host file is being ignored on the Risc PC.
I clicked Use Host file only but each time I check the Host Names the
click has moved back to Use Name Servers Also .

Does this have any significance?
