f2s news server change 4 problems
From about mid afternoon on Tuesday f2s required username and password toallow you to download news
They say they emailed everyone about it but I didn?t get a message! If
anyone else did could they email me a copy of the email.
Without it you get an error ?Authentication required?
We are using the ANT Server Suite but I suspect the above problems will
affect all news clients, some of the other problems listed below I think
will be ANT Suite specific though I?d expect them to affect the stand alone
version as well as the Server version.
The user name and password you need to use is not the one you use to log
into to the members area but the the username and password you would have
put into your ADSL router.
Beware the user name seems to require a different case to the router!
AIUI all f2s ADSL user names are of the form adsl<phone number>@freedom2surf
e.g. adsl01903523679@freedom2surf but for the news server the adsl has to be
in upper case e.g. ADSL01903523679@freedom2surf our router/s have worked
fine for years with lowercase!
n.b. Helpfully one of the support line staff didn?t know they?d changed
anything
We also had to add /xhdr as we got a message that they didn?t support
NEWNEWS so in the Ant Suite !NetNews now reads.
Server: ADSL01903523679@freedom2surf:password@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/xhdr
Our next problem when the ANT Suite started a transfer, was it got to
?counting? 40,000 articles to be downloaded I aborted!
I tried manually changing the date since last transfer in
!InetSuite.Internet.files.!InetNews to be a couple of hours before but it
still tried transferring 10?s of thousands. By setting the transfer since
to ?now? it ?only? downloaded a thousand or so (10MB)
The only problem is many of articles it downloaded were old (2003..) and
they are not being expired!
We have marked them all as read, but they can still be seen with ?show old
articles? I don?t know how I can force them to be expired. Any ideas?
I also got an error to do with the number of streams or connection I forget
the exact error message, so I reduce my setting i.e.
# Do we attempt to open multiple connections to the NNTP server? (1..4)
MultipleStreams: 3
to:
MultipleStreams: 2
No error now on this point.
p.s. we are now getting the following error message in our log when doing a
news transfer. It doesn?t sound like it is related to the problem of not
expiring old news.
122:12 ERR nntpd: Can?t open active groups file: News:/active
183:06 WRN nntp unable to open ?News:/active? for writing due to update
during this fetch
Any ideas?
