Does ShareFS not use TCP/IP to talk to another computer running RO?

No it uses UDP/IP.

That would probably be the reason then.

When setting up a software firewall you have to allow UDP ports
32770, 32771, 49117, 49152. Decent firewalls will distinguish between
TCP and UDP use on the same port number, I can't remember what the XP
one does.

Mmnnn! somewhat over my bonce, but I get the drift.
I've had no problems networking to/from the XP machine, only the damn
Vista.

Something to bring a smile to the faces of you RO purists... Slight aside,
but to do with networking... Oh woe is anyone using Vista.

There are some Palm/Handmark database file on the XP machine that I want
for reference purposes on the Vista Laptop, they will be kept in sync with
the advanced Window filer app I use on both machines, 'PowerDeskPro-6'
that has an integrated Dir and file Sync facility.

So earlier today I created a new directory (nnn) on the Vista laptop, Set
is as Shared, then copied the Handmark DB files over from the XP, then
tested 'em and they were okay.

Happened to notice that I'd made an error in the directory name, hilighted
and went to rename it... "You do not have permission to do this that or
the other, contact your system administrator."

For Fs sake, I'm the only user, I'm the administrator.

Ah I thought, this bodes well for the sync updating, so I went to
networking on the XP and clicked the (nnn) directory... "You do not have
the required permissions the access this folder. Contact your system
administrator."

I spent the next half an hour in the directory properties, fiddling with
Security, access, ownership and permissions attempting to sort this out.
"You do not have permission..."

No luck, even though from the Vista side I could open the directory, use
the DB files, move them, even delete them, I could not rename the parent
directory, or access it from the other end of the network.

By now really peed off, I created a new directory (Correctly named)
dragged the DB files (Shifted) out of the errant directory into the new
one, deleted the old directory... Test accessed it from the other end of
the network okay.
That boys and girls is what Vista does, among other nasty thing all the
time.
