Setting the scene.
For some time now I have been happily accessing the internet using
broadband via Orpheus (thanks PV), but as the RiscPC grows long in the
tooth (Strongarm kinetic running RiscOS Adjust v4.39 with a Full Monty
Unipod thingey) the thoughts are to move the centre of attention to an
A9h. The idea is to network up the Router, RiscPC and A9h via a hub,
currently there being just a bit of cable 'twixt RiscPC and Router.
The plan.
The first step in this process is to place a hub between the Router
and RPC, this appears to be Very Complicated.
I have been given a hub which I am assured is working(!) and there is
a set of instructions on the PV site for anyone attempting this.
But..., clicking on the link for the Adjust version of these comes
back with some sort of site maintenance message.
If it really is a hub (not a router or switch) it is a simple matter
of connecting the uplink port of the hub to the router - possibly
needing a switch setting to uplink - and connecting the RiscPC to the
hub.
ThanksThe questions
1. Can I hot swap the networking cables while testing or does all the
machinery have to be turned off first? A basic and simple question but
I'm afraid it reflects the source.
As has been said - you can plug and unplug without problem.
If the network card in the RiscPC has both BNC and RJ45 connectors it
will need to be connected to a device which has power when the RPC is
switched on or it may default to the wrong connection type, but once
on and working you can swap cables as much as you like.
The router currently used works OK when just connected directly to the2. Any suggestions for a test to check if the hub is working
correctly?
Try to connect to the router or the internet.
RiscPC.
Connecting the A9 and the RiscPC together via the hub and they do
"talk". The probelm is that the router gets lost when connected to the
RiscPC via the hub. Even "pinging" fails. More curiously (for me
anyway) the Link/Rx light on the hub doesn't show whatever port is
used when connecting the router, each light shows when the two
processors are connected whatever ports are used.
Thanks to all for the help so far.3. Can anyone please supply a copy of the Adjust instructions for the
above?
If it is a hub there is nothing to configure.
Mailed not posted 'cos I'm havning trouble posting news :-(
