Re: FTP problems

FTP was never particularly reliable, which I blamed on the rather old
server I've been using. However in the past few weeks it got worse and
worse until now it is unusable. Mostly I use FTPc, but I have SmartFTP
on the laptop. Sometimes get past the log-in, though mostly it just
says connected failed. Tried with several servers, all the same, got
other people to test the servers, they are fine. BT insist the
broadband is OK, but they are going to check the line - in the next 5
working days :-(

In the end I couldn't even transfer a file of 34 bytes!

Tried a different router, but that didn't help. Web access OK, but
slow, and lots of errors. Email access also often reports it can't
find the server. Strangely, streamed audio works fine!?!?!? Moved the
router nearer to the socket (downstairs) and ran an ethernet cable up
to the computer room. News is abysmally slow.

Does anyone recognise the above symptoms? I guess I'm looking for a
me-too followed by a success story of how it was fixed ;-)

Very similar. I use PlusNet as ISP through a BT ADSL connection. The
network has one RPC one PPC Mac and a LaserWriter II.

Web browsing and email seem to be normal, including downloading and
uploading quite large messages. However in the last two weeks FTP has
become almost unusable. Once or twice it has sprung back to life but
is just as bad the following morning.

PlusNet support has asked me to run the BT speed test, but this
insists on having MSIE version 6.0 or above. Typical! However I doubt
if the network speed is the problem. It's more likely something
Plusnet is doing to restrict file sharing.

I maintain six web sites including my ISP site, four on Linux/Apache
and one on Windows/IIS. FTP transfers to the PlusNet site seem to be
quite quick (what a surprise), and those to Linux servers complete
eventually (going for a four course meal helps) and FTP to the 'doze
server fails altogether. I can sometimes get a file to upload by
running FTPc manually (as opposed to by a script from SiteMatch), and
doing an 'abort' each time it grinds to a halt. Zero-length pureFTPd
files are generated in the target 'folder' on the server.
