I have a ADSL/Router/PrintServer which is a SafeCom SWAMRU-54108

What printer do you have, and how much memory has it? Are you sending
bitmaps? The SWAMRU has only 8Mb. I had a problem printing to a 96Mb
Xerox colour laser as its memory management wasn't anything like as
good as the smaller memoried HP laser I have now.

A printer server with only 8Mb may not be of much use if you are
sending big files.

Thanks to all who offered advice.

My printer is a USB connected Canon i550 and thanks to someone sending
me another version of LPRSpool I now can print to the printserver and
get control of the machine back in 15seconds

Presumably you acquired such a printer to take advantage of its high
resolution. An A4 page at 4800x1200 will produce immense bitmap files. No
matter how clever the software, huge wodges of RAM in the server or the
printer are the only sure way to free up a computer quickly.
