Just to recap: I can now see the shares on Centrex (the WindowsXP machine) from the two RISC OS machines; and I can also see the shares

I couldn't find "view workgroup computers" nor "Microsoft Windows Network" as you suggest above. Can you be more specific? Would running the "Add a network place wizard" help?

On this XP Pro SP2 machine here;

Windows Explorer, My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows
Network, [WorkgroupName], [ComputerName], [ShareName]

The add network place wizard appears to just add shortcuts to things you
can already see by other means (in this case [1]). You could, for
example, take [ComputerName] or [ShareName] in the above and add a
shortcut to it so that it appears directly under My Network Places.

i.e. it avoids having to go down into the Entire Network structure to
find it again.

However, if you're mapping it to a drive letter then you only need to
find it in Entire Network once in the first place, so you don't gain much.

Note - this is all on XP Pro. XP Home might be an entirely different
bucket of hamsters.

I would still like to see the RISC OS machine icons without having to
do a search as previously. I can see that I can set the RISC OS shares up on the Centrex as if they were extra drives with drive letters, i.e., the shares mapped to drive letters. I want to avoid any extra settings in case it just produces further complications.

Doing it as a drive letter is a simpler approach, and I woudl recommend it. Doing everything with UNCs is somewhat clunkier, in my view.

[1] You could also add FTP sites or other things that can't be browsed to without knowing their names, which might include samba shares that aren't advertised by the server. However in this case you can find it by the search interface, which implies that it is being advertised, and appears under Entire Network somewhere.
