I use a D-Link DSL-300G+ modem here, rather than a router. The old
Intel box running IPCop is a much more manageable firewall/router than
anything in firmware. Plus DansGuardian gives me excellent filtering.

Free is still cheaper (:-). And I'd trust a secondhand D-Link or Nortel
or Bay Networks hub over a six quid switch any day.

We have lots of 1005Ds of various different generations running all
over the place with no problems. 900AP+ can be a bit temperamental; I
now make it policy to set a DHCP reservation for each one. Fixed IP
addresses have caused them to not reconnect to the network fully after
falling over under heavy load. Worst offender in that space is the
2000AP+, which is just pants, even with the latest firmware.
Recommended budget D-Link AP is the 2100, with firmware 2.10.
