That may not be necessary. Set the router to use DHCP on it's WAN port.
That should do it (works fine here: Vigor 2300 connecting to a Motorola
SURFboard modem). From the router's Main Menu, follow these links:

Internet Access Setup
Static or Dynamic IP

That should take you a page where you set (left column):

Access Control
Broadband Access Enable

Keep WAN Connection
<not required at this stage>

WAN physical type
Auto negotiation

RIP Protocol
<leave unset>

and (right column):

WAN IP Network Setting
Obtain an IP address automatically

Router Name
<Leave open unless you know it's required>

Domain Name
<Leave open unless you know it's required>

Default MAC Address

You can skip the rest. Click OK and the router should connect. After
that, it should show IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway IP Address in
the fields on the bottom right of that page. You should be able to find
the DHCP assigned Primary and Secondary DNS by looking at the Online
Status page (link from the Main Menu).

Feel free to ask directly if you need more info (you know my 'real'
email address...).

Regards,
Frank
