Ok; nice and simple...

Even better.

I used !Locate to find all modules in !Boot and the only copy of
Internet was the 5.04 already in System.310.Modules.Network which isn't
getting loaded.

A few experimental reboots further on, and I've found that Evan's advice
about the file in Autosense has worked though I've not done the unplug
he suggested; when I boot now I end up with EtherH 4.33 in use. Also I
changed !Internet.!Run to explicitly load Internet 5.04. So far this
hasn't stopped the "illegal task handle" message when I try to use
shared disks, so I expect I need to try newer versions of Freeway and
ShareFS as well.
A bit later... I copied the Freeway 0.28 and ShareFS 3.41 (and
SHare+ 3.41, which is identical) modules from a downloaded Uniboot into
!System.310.Modules.Network and rebooted, but neither of these actually
got loaded. Looking at the !Reporter logs for the boot shows that
Choices.Internet.Startup ends in:
IfThere Resources:$.Resources.ShareFS.!Boot then Run
Resources:$.Resources.ShareFS.!Boot
RMFind Freeway 0.26 System:Modules.Network.Freeway
RMFind ShareFS 3.38 System:Modules.Network.Share+
Obviously I can edit those lines to force the newer modules into use,
but every time I use !InetSetup and it regenerates the Startup obey file
I'll lose the changes.
Hmmm. Last time I hit a problem like that (in the ANT Suite, in fact,
where it auto-generates some file or other when you run its
configuration dialogue and that wiped out a change I had made [1]) I
'fixed' it by forcing it to run a program of my own after their one had
run to insert my change again. I feel another fix coming on.
Anyway, rebooting after changing those lines does give me Freeway 0.28
and ShareFS 3.41 in use. But I still get the 'illegal task handle' and
shared-disk icons vanishing.
Time for bed said Zebeddee. He was right.
