He's not using it as the last number, but as shorthand for the
broadcast address. Still not sure it's a good idea, though. However, to
append his results back in:

If I ping 192.168.2.255 on this box, where my RiscPC is 192.168.2.99, I
only get responses from it too. The only responses above are from the
192.168.1.201 address.
