I totally see the logic of this Aaron but Im a bit confused as
to the support you would need to give.
If the linux VRPC was packaged as say a Debian package wouldnt
the dependancies be inbuilt in that the VRPC package would
look for the libraries it needed and download them if they
wern't there. It would just run as an task on top of the
existing (say) Ubuntu which is houskeeping the hardware
drivers.
Yes, that is the theory, but reality is rather different. It would be
reasonably easy to package the software for a particular version of a
particular distribution, but there are simply too many distributions
around, different versions of each are in use at the same time, and
they are also changing all the time.
A product for one particular version of one particular distribution
would be completely pointless. Producing packages for all versions of
all distributions is impossible. That works for open source software
because there are countless volunteers and paid professionals who
build all these packages from source code (obviously, a lot of it is
automated but someone still has to sort out all the problems).
So, that leaves the option of providing a complete Linux system
including the VRPC software, but then, there is exactly the problem
with all installation and support issues for the base system itself.
