It's all well and good adding things to RISC OS but if you go and
add features with the same functionality as Windows, then you're
going down the "Windows without Microsoft" route which David
mentioned earlier.

What David said was utter bollocks, and you're just repeating it.

Can you explain exactly what you mean by "utter bollocks"?

I explained that in my reply to Paul. Adding functionality to an
operating system does not turn it into another operating system. My
main objection was to the bit about wanting Windows without
Microsoft. It's absolute rubbish to suggest that this is equivalent
to wanting RISC OS with enhancements.

Yes, of course it is, but why did you say that what I said was "utter
bollocks" when what I said was much the same as what you said?

Adding functionality to RISC OS that happens to be present in A N
Other Operating System does not turn it into ANOOS, it makes it
RISC OS with enhancements. Just like many enhancements that RISC
OS has already acquired during its lifetime in fact. Why is it
that no-one can understand this?

We do understand this (or, at least, I do) but why don't you
understand that if you /change/ several of the functionalities to
the exact way that another OS does it, then RO will become
increasingly the same as that other OS

Operating systems evolve as users require more functionality.
Generally speaking users of different operating systems want similar
functionality. RISC OS has evolved in many ways over the years. Much
of this evolution has paralleled evolution in other OS's. As far as I
can see it's still RISC OS.

Yes, but RO does things in one way, Windows in another, and Linux and
MacOS in other ways; but MacOS and Linux both act more like Windows
than RO. Some of the functionality of these other OSses depends on the
GUI model and to add it to RO would probably necessitate a profound
change in the look and feel of RO, making it more like the others.

My point goes further: it is that not only do users of two or more
systems clamouring for the additions want the same functionality, they
actually would prefer the several systems to look and feel the same
because only then would they be able to move from one to the other with
total ease. And that isn't "utter bollocks"!
