Sorry to say it, but its applications that count these days more than
operating systems. Google Earth is superb example of harnessing the
power of the internet to process vast quatitlies of data and to
present it to the user in simple, useful and importantly fun way.

I quite agree. It's data and the ability to process it in an application
in a way that is useful to the user that is of overriding importance. If
there is a choice of underlying OS on which to run such applications
then that is a secondary advantage.

These days I like to integrate my hobby activities which include
(ski-)mountaineering, hillwalking and photography, with my home
computing. So my digital cameras are all synchronised to UTC and I
collect tracklogs with one of my GPS units. The resulting digital
photographs and tracklogs can then be cross-referenced with digital
mapping to generate photoalbums linked to google earth maps (The
windows software package GPS Utility < http:// www.gpsu.co.uk/ > has the
features to do this). The applications needed to do this in a user
friendly way are available for Windows (and many are available for
Linux/Unix) but sadly not for RISC OS.

I still use RISC OS for many work and business related activities but
when it comes to my hobbies above the choice is usually Windows.
