A recent thread on Java seemed to leave a conclusion that the existing
java plug-in could be distributed and would also be a reasonable

Did it? It was withdrawn by Acorn when they didn't renew their licence
with Sun, so it hasn't been distributable for years, and I doubt if
anyone could sort out the rights now.
The impression I got was that Acorn hadn't licensed 1.2, but 1.0 was
unaffected. Did they actually withdraw 1.0 when it was still of any
use?
My mobile is less powerful than a decent risc pc, but it can run opera
mini, an ftp server, google maps, google mail (OK, as poor as outlook,
but useful for checking mail) and various IM systems, all via java.
Being able to run these would be useful and would plug some missing
holes in RISC OS functionality.
Being able to run some cruddy mobile java apps in the top 128x128
pixels of my 2048x1536 screen would really be an incentive to stick
with RISC OS.
All the java apps I've tried scale to fill the 640x200 of my mobile
screen, so I would expect them to be able to expand to a useful size.
It would be horrible if they were not in a window on the desktop
though.
Some of the apps I've tried would be quite acceptable as an extra app
on the desktop, especially if it stopped me needing to fire up a
second system.
