By far the most noise seems to be from the fan,
CJE sell a variety of quieter replacement fans, check with Chris which
one is suitable for you system. As mine is a 3 slicer, I opted for a
mid range to get more airflow.
It might be that I can't use it (see other thread).then the internal HD which is backed up mostly onto the second. The
second seems fairly quiet
You could always swap which you use as primary and backup, and keep
the backup spun down.
and the PC card fan isn't too bad.
If you don't use the PC card, its worth removing that. It means the
PSU fan has to less work to do, so can be quiter.
Is this such a good idea? The desktop spins it up anyway on startupIsn't spinning down a disc dangerous?
Desktop drives aren't designed to be used like laptop drives
continuously spun up and spun down (although recent ones are
more tollerant). However, if you only use one drive as a backup,
spin it down in the boot sequence and most of the time it will stay
off quiet and cool. When you come to to backups access it and it will
spin up, then leave it up for the remainder of that session.
A BASIC file containing the following will spin down ADFS drive 5.
SYS "XADFS_PowerControl",2,5,0
The X form of the SWI is useful as it then wont complain if drive 5 is
removeable and not present.
(after predesk) and on shutdown. Is it necessary to configure it as
not present?
