As an aside, I find it astonishing that anyone with a Mac, on which
you can tick one box to run Apache, would use a RiscPC as a web
server.

I have a Mac which I use almost solely for one application (genealogy)
and I really don't want anything else running on it at the same time.

Why? It's already doing lots of other things at the same time; it could
also very easily run Apache too. You would not even notice the faintest
performance hit.

You may be right but my genealogy entry is all of fresh data and I do
not want anything running that might corrupt anything while I do this.
Once it is entered, it is backed up every night and should be fine but
the entry process is somewhat precious.

On the other hand I have an old SARPC which is otherwise doing nothing
and might be tossed on the skip and which run this low throughput hobby
website with no problem at all and with no nasty people getting their
paws inside it. (And there is a firewall on the router, for whatever
benefit that offers.)

And I forgot: if the power goes off on the Mac, it does not restart when
power is back; Risc PC restarts just fine.

In the Energy Saver preferences, there is an option to `Restart
automatically after a power failure'. Do you have this option ticked?
If you do, and it still doesn't restart, I can't help any further.

I now find that this is already ticked yet things got in a twist in
last month's power cut (we have far too many here). Thanks anyhow and
I'll explore further.
