Indeed, Mike Williams really knew what he was doing. ISTR he was a
previous editor of RISC User as well.
He appreciated that if you're going to dedicate a magazine to DTP and
graphics then appearance *is* important since readers (including
prospective subscribers) will assume that if you can't produce a really
professional looking well laid out magazine how can the magazine's
articles on that subject be worth reading.
There isn't a dedicated DTP/Graphics magazine for RISC OS. Trying to
apply any of Acorn Publisher's layouts to a magazine containing general
RISC OS items would be a disaster.
Sorry John, but I disagree and have told you many times the same thing.
Setup a series of House styles for the different types of articles and use
them.
What on Earth do you think we do?!!
There is one general frame for the whole magazine and a single set of styles.
Only special articles - eg Henk Huinen's 'Ambigrams' ignore that layout.
You *can* use the basics of the Acorn Publisher layout/structure.
Our structure is close to that of Acorn Publisher and is developed from it. It
is an improvement of the Acorn Publisher layout:
1. We use a serif body font for clarity and ease of reading by more literate
readers (we assume all!) - and a font for listings, &c.
2. We avoid 'all uppercase' headings as those are harder to read and remind IT
literate people of 'shouting' on user groups.
3. We use sub-headings within most articles to help locate items.
4. We have a 100% colour (rather than 50:50) magazine.
5. We have added 4 more pages on top of the largest Acorn Publisher magazine.
6. We avoid the over-wide (eg 14 word) columns that appeared in some Acorn
Publisher articles.
7. Our headers and footers are less likely to get entangled with the main body
of the page.
8. Our article stop is a clear logo rather than a Selwyn 'letter'.
how/why a DTP mag's layout would "be a disaster" for a general RISCOS mag,
and got none, I was tickled to see the apparent volte face - or do John
and Qercus Editor have different thoughts on the subject? - and 8 items none
of which seems disaster-inducing (before improvement) nor at all specific to
the mag's subject matter (except the font for listings).
John - thanks for the offer of a free copy; the address used for posting
this is valid. Perhaps 281 would be a useful example, so I can see what
your comments actually relate to. I shall look out for AU 260 and 262 as
well.
Rgds,
Andrew
