This behaviour (displaying the "no connection" symbol even when asked
not to) is apparently an issue with Windows XP SP2. (See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902974 for details)
The suggested work around is to enable the "hide inactive icons"
feature, and tell it to always hide that icon.
