Having never had to resort to a PCMCIA card for wireless
networking, I'm a little surprised that using one means the wired
interface needs disabling. Can you not use the card with the older
interface still enabled?

Yep! Go to control panel, network connections, open the properties box
for the wired connector in your case and at the bottom of the Local
Area Connection Properties window are two possible tick boxes, untick
both boxes - no more icon for that connection and no more messages
about no connectivity etc..
You simply do not need normally to disable the wired network
connector.
