I agree - but sometimes you don't have an option but to have directories
containing 1000s of files. As I mentioned before, I have several such
directories, usually the result of backing up forums and online
databases from my server in London. One directory stores web counters,
and ISTR last contained about 8000 files in it.
Said server is probably x86 based, loads of grunt and costs a small fortune
(at least from the point of view of a home user)
Mind you, using software designed to not dump all files in one place
improves things.
In this instance though the user needs to start being more organised in the
file placement since that happens to be a zero cost improvement option.
