Probably because those formats are entirely proprietory.
I find that some older car CD players can be a bit choosy about CDR (and
totally refuse to deal with CDRW).
If using a PC, be careful about what you use to burn with. I find Acorn
burners are OK (I use !CDBlaze myself - many others use !CDBurn), but
audio CDs burned on PCs using Nero can be flaky on quite a few players.
Also, if burning MP3's, keep the directory structure as simple as
possible, try not to mix in other types of file and try to use ISO9660
rather than Joliet.
