My expert (18 year old IM addict) says that MSN is by far the best and
none of the web based IM systems come close.
For textual IM, MSN, YIM, AIM, ICQ, and Jabber are roughly equal - MSN
and YIM have good multimedia support, AIM, ICQ, and Jabber have good
multiple-location support. I have friends on four of the five, so I
use them all.
Web-based IM clients require a running browser, don't easily support
mobile (usually it's AIM, MSN, and YIM supported by cell carriers
where I am,) and generally have trouble notifying the user of new IMs.
