Are there any other architectures I'm missing?
You might want to check the history of the SPARC
and MIPS processors and their relation to Sun
and SGI workstations.
Peter
SPARC was designed for workstations and servers, yes, but remember
that personal ownership clause. Without it, SPARC definitely counts.
MIPS, OTOH, appears to have been designed by MIPS Computer Systems,
and then processors sold to companies such as SGI. Remember, the topic
of this thread is personal computers that had processors designed
specifically for them.
PA-RISC was first used in minicomputers, actually.
The Xerox Star that was actually put into production appears to have
used a CPU based on the AMD Am2900.
The Super FX... was designed as a coprocessor for an existing console.
The SuperH... it appears the SH-1 was used in the Sega 32X? Making it
a coprocessor for an existing console.
I will admit, the question is thinly defined, but... Also, I wasn't
saying that ARM was the only CPU designed for home/personal use, which
would be outright wrong - I think it might be the only CPU
architecture designed for a *specific* home/personal computer.
Oh, and I did forget an architecture in my original list... Alpha,
which was designed to be a RISC CPU that could run VMS - I think we
can all agree that a VAX isn't a personal computer.
