Erm! So I can backup my RO hardrive, then when this old, old SARPC dies
I can take the caddy mounted ADFS backup drive, connect it to my
Windows Vista Laptop, and read it successfully? No!
That would be because Windows is the least compatible OS on the planet.
It's only ever compatible with a small subset of itself.
'Windows' is an OS. Why would it need to be compatible with anything?
Compatability is work of applications.
The context is reading hard disc drives. That's the work of OSs.
If the OS can't or won't read the HDD, apps can't read the files.
And Windows can read FAT and NTFS drives very well with the application
built into it, explorer.exe.
With other suitable applications it can read many more formats including
ADFS/IDEFS if somebody writes the app and driver. As Ray mentions
further down, I also use a java app to read the HD in my PVR (JAFusion).
