I have a Ricoh MP7200A in a RiscPC. Recently it stopped ejecting and I
can't change CDs except by partially dismantling the computer to get
at the innards. It appears to be trying to push the tray out, but then
gives up. There is a paper clip size hole but I can't make it eject
the disc. Anyone else had this problem?

Like a lot of CD drives I think the tray servo motor dives through a small
rubber belt. These either stretch or lose their elasticity with age. I've
often managed to replace them with a small rubber band but it's a fiddly
process. However, since drives are now so cheap it might not be worth the
trouble.

Yes we had a DVD drive (Tesco about 18 months old) at work that
developed this fault (it made an awful noise when you tried to eject
the disc).

I replaced it with a new one (£19!) and then thought I'd get the disc
out by dismantling the machine. As you say the belt had broken and
Tesco couldn't supply a replacement (and their manufacturer hasn't
replied to the email I sent about a month ago either!)

I tried the rubber band and an 'O' ring but couldn't get the tension
right. In the end I super-glued the original and it worked fine. Don't
know how long before the next bit of perished rubber gives up the
ghost and it might end up with a belt of super-glue!

All the belts I could find on the web were (just) the wrong size.
