I'm not sure what you mean by 'refuses to boot'. Do you mean won't start

Very early I get the message:

Machine start up has not been completed successfully:
Disc drive not known

Floppy boot Cancel Retry

If the former there was a problem with some PSU's on the Omega where
they weren't switching on all the power lines properly. I know Dave
Prosser
did a mobo mod to fix this but perhaps your PSU has deteriorated a bit.
The
fact that you say it's OK when you switch off the power would seem to
indicate this is the problem.

I can imagine that this is the reason for it.

No, if you're getting the message you say you're getting then the *computer*
is starting up properly so that's not the problem. It's the HD that's not
starting.

If the latter it's possible that the HD is taking too long to spin up.
When you hit 'Retry' it's managed to get itself up to speed and so it
starts
OK. Two possibly reasons for this, power supply or HD itself. If the 12v
line on the PSU is low then the drive could struggle to start, or if the
drive's
bearings are worn the extra friction will do the same.

But if there is some extra friction it should not depend on where I switch
on the machine. Unfortunately I do not have a second hard drive to test
it.

Possibly because everything has cooled down so there's just a bit more
'ooomph' to kick the drive into life ? I don't know, but the info you've
given shows that it's either the PSU or the HD. If you're still running the
original HD then it's a few years old now so it /might/ be getting near the
end of its life.
