It may be just the way plug in filters 'appear' but in reality there
should be no filter at all between the BT line and the ADSL modem.
The gadget which TalkTalk supplied and which is labelled 'Microfilter'
has two outlets. I assume that the phone outlet is filtered and the
ADSL outlet is straight through. The ones which I bought are similar.
I take it by "modem" you do mean an ADSL modem
Yes, the new one supplied by TalkTalk.
I'd say the chances of getting that to talk to RISC OS are slight. Best to
ignore it and get a router - that will additionally allow more than one
machine to be networked - and talk to one another.
However, there can be a problem in setting up that router via RISC OS -
some work and some don't. But once set up - perhaps with a PC - will then
work fine. I think Paul Vigay is the one to ask about one which can be set
up via RISC OS. Just to clarify, you use your browser to set it up and
with mine the JavaScript on Oregano I doesn't allow me to log in. I can,
however, now log in and alter things (if ever needed) via my PC card and
IE5. But don't know if that would have worked from scratch.
I still advise you to run some cat5e from the unfiltered connection at
the master socket directly to where you want the ADSL modem.
Presumably cat5e is a special type of cable?
Yes.
The best way by far is to fit the router as close as possible to the
incoming telephone line and change the master socket for one with a built
in filter. That has two outlets - one for the router and one for the
existing telephone wiring which will then just work normally with no
filters needed at any outlet. You then run Cat5 from the router to each of
your computers - or to places where you think you might later want one.
Outlets are available which give you ADSL and telephone on one standard
sized plate (I still have my RPC connected to the phone line via the
original modem for fax use)
Thanks for your comments.
There are dozens of suppliers of all the hardware needed for the wiring,
but I use this one as they have a local branch and a non too bewildering
choice.

But they don't supply routers.
