LCD/TFT's are best run at a 1:1 ratio.

Indeed, but my particular problem (and the reason why I'm still using
a CRT) is that I have 3 machines linked via a kvm switch to the one
monitor, and for reasons which I won't go into here, one of them (a
subnotebook PC) only has 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768 available, whereas
the other two (an Iyonix and PC laptop) are set to 1280 x 1024 (but
could go higher, say to 1600 x 1200 or more).

So my question is, would a 1600 x 1200 native res LCD be better for
displaying 800 x 600 (i.e. an exact 2:1 ratio) than, for example, a
1280 x 1024 native res model?

I would not recommand a LCD unless you can run it all the time at native
resolution and maximum colour depth. If you need to swap between two or three
resolutions (for different machines, or you dont have a graphics card in a
Risc PC), then a CRT is still best. Anything other than native resolution
is tiring to look at, pixel doubled will be better than an uneven scaling,
but its going to look far blockier than it would on an CRT.
