I can't speak for others, but the beauty of the A9 is it's emminent
portability.

You'll find I haven't disagreed with that!

That being the case, a whole lot of expansion options
not being available is not an issue as it would cease to be portable
if I had to carry a Tesco bag full add-ons around with me.

Well you'll still need a keyboard and monitor? Just as you would with
the Iyonix Aria Cube, so don't dump that Tesco bag just yet. You could
(of course) argue that you have a keyboard and monitor waiting for you
at your destination - in which case neither the Cube or A9 would
require anything extra.

The concept of just being able to put it in my pocket and take it home to
work it the evenings is very appealing. As my use would be for
business the relative speed of USB & Ethernet ports is not a high
priority.

Agreed, but I think my point was for some people having a machine
slightly *less* portable (the Aria Cube isn't a big machine by any
measure) but not having the attendant limitations of the A9 is a big
plus for it. I'd also point out that *most* expansion options for the
Cube would *not* change it's physical size (adding a second HD wouldn't
require an extra box or the like - whereas on the A9 it would).

I don't need video on disc, so the smaller disc size is
not a problem (I presume the HD is a "laptop" type of thing, and so
would tend to be rather smaller and more expensive on any platform),
and I would have no need for video cards etc.

Such harddisks also also tend to be *slower* (they have slower
rotational speeds which up the rotational latency).

The whole world may not revolve around the A9, but it is (as far as I
know) creating a new market segment - between a PDA and a full laptop.

Thing is the RISC OS market is a *very small one* I'd argue it's too
small to allow for much in the way of fragmentation. The A9 is
*neither* a PDA or a laptop (both PDA's and laptops are self contained
they require *no* external hardware whereas A9 *does*). A PDA is more
portable than an A9.

To describe A9Home as novel *is* true I could see it being deployed in
"unattended" areas driving message displays and other such dedicated
roles. Which considering the origins of the A9Home as part of a family
of embedded controllers would make sense.

That's a bit like saying "I got a BMW for the nearly the same price as
a Mini - but I shouldn't compare them because they're not for the same
market segment". If I had the option of a BMW or mini at (more or less)
the same price I know which one I'd go for.

Apart from the obvious "both *are* BMW's", Mini's (real ones, anyway)

Chuckle, I hadn't thought of that!

I'd say it's actually protability, that's not the same thing as size
necesserily.

If the A9 was the same size as an Iyonix Aria cube it would be no more
portable though ;-)
