That happens all to often unfortunately - software / manuals get stored
seperately from hardware and they get split up over time :(

At some point I seem to remember that the audio encoding format for the
discs changed, so you won't get any audio if you try and play a modern
disc in the machine.
Video should still work regardless of disc age I think - do you get video
output with any of them?

You should be able to play discs even without the BBC connected - you
only need to hook up the BBC's video to the genlock in the player if
you want to mix the video output from the BBC with that coming from the
disc.
Now, going from memory, the player will only provide mixed video on the
composite video pin of the SCART connector; it *won't* do it on the
SCART's RGB lines and they just carry normal video output from the disc.
Something to keep in mind if you ever get everything working, as 99% of
computer monitors with a SCART connector will only accept signals from the
RGB lines and don't decode composite.
TVs I think generally have two SCART sockets, but likely only one of those
will decode composite video too and the other's RGB only.

Someone else can answer that one - I've never used EBay in my life :-) I'm
sure they do turn up there from time to time.
cheers
