I can't remember *exactly* what happens when you boot Pre-RISC OS 4 without a
drive and thus without !Boot, but if you get an error saying that RISC OS
couldn't find a !Boot or something similar, you can just cancel the error box
and depending on configuration you will either be left at a "*" prompt or be
left in a minimal Desktop (limited to 640x480 16Colours - a bit like "Safe
Mode" from the dark side). If you get left at a "*" prompt, this means that
the machine is not "Configured" to boot into the Desktop in the absense of a
!Boot sequence, so you just have to type "Desktop" at the prompt and press
enter.
If you were to have various important bits (as Andrew said) on floppies, then
you could feed the machine with these and view the directory filer windows to
allow the RISC OS Filer to "see" them. After this point (until you reboot),
you can still swap floppies because RISC OS has a neat facility to ask for
the disc that it remembers contained the files it wanted, so providing that
you label the floppies with the same identifiers as their actual disc name
(electronic name), then you'll know which one the OS is requesting. This is
different to DOS, where the OS couldn't differentiate between two different
floppies that had been used in A:. The RISC OS disc naming references work
for CDs, Floppies, HardDiscs (basically any discs).
Remember that you can use the Menu (Middle Mouse) on the Floppy drive icon
and use "Name Disc" to change a Floppy (or hard) Disc's name. Don't change
the hard disc name unless you have good reason, as you will need to rename
references within !Boot to refer to the new Disc Name ;-).
Also remember that it is good practice when swapping discs (especially if
you're written to them or if they are DOS formatted), to dismount (from the
Iconbar Icon's Menu) before removing them. This ensures that any buffered
write to the media is flushed out to the physical disc.
