I had exactly the same problem with a Canon FS2710 film scanner and Twain
driver. I solved it by buying a x2 neutral density filter and placing it
inside the scanner (well out of focus). This reduces the highlights to a
level the scanner can handle. It needs to be removed on the rare occasions I
scan negatives.
