I agree, and I suspect that there are two main reasons for this.
Not all monitors can cope with composite sync
Not all early vga monitors coped with the off-spec excuse for a vga
signal that early Acorns produced.
In this case its a A540, which has separate xtals for the vga mode dot
clock, so timing should be ok, and modern monitors are *much* more
forgiving, and its an Acorn monitor in this case, which are known to
deal with composite sync.
One adaptor I have is made from a Archimedes scart lead, with the scart
end removed and replaced by a vga socket, the other is a small silver
dongle, which may have been an original NEC item. Although I could not
guarantee that is has not been reworked as I have two. One that adapts
a vga monitor to a 9 pin source, and one that adapts a CGA monitor to a
15 pin source. Presumably this was for a AKF11/12/17 to A5000.
I am going to have a close look at both, as I would like to be able to
get my A540s onto a KVM, but its not very interested in admitting they
are there at the moment.
