During my time in the RAF we had two-way radios for communication around
the base. There was the standard set, and an intrinsically safe version
for use around fuel and weapons. This version had a restricted output,
sealed switches and a lock on the battery to prevent removal/replacement
without the key. This was all to prevent the possibility of sparks being
caused in a potentially volatile atmosphere. There were strict limits
around fuel pumps where certain articles were prohibited, such as non
intrinsically safe radios, smoking, studded boots, etc. These boundaries
were marked with a red circle painted on the ground.
If you think about it, when you put 45 litres of petrol into a fuel tank,
you are pumping out 45 litres of petrol vapour into the air. This will
fall to the lowest point and is only dispersed by air currents. Whilst I
can't ever remember any incident of explosions caused by fuel vapour at a
filling station, there must have been a reason behind these restrictions.
Better safe than BOOOOM! ;-)
Cheers,
Grahame.
