Let that be a warning to all of you! Make sure that the case
ventilation is clear in this hot weather.

Exactly because of this, my RISC PC is going topless during the hot weather.

This is may not be effective with some case designs, the RPC included. With
the case closed as designed, the fan created a small but contant air flow
over the components to remove the heat they generate. When the case is open
there may not be any airflow over some components so cooling less efficent
and their temperature can rise significantly, even though the overall
temperature within the case is lower.

I agree that it might not be effective for everyone.

However, the main 'warm' components of my machine are my two harddrives.

There is a definite temperature reduction on both drives (checked with SMART on my ADFS one - by roughly a couple of degrees, but can't be precise because it was done on different days - however it matches with the 'hand 1cm above the drive test') with the case lid off, so I'm guessing ventilation on the top slice isn't all it's meant to be.

Now - if only my girlfriend did the same, summer would be MUCH more fun
;o).

That on the other hand is guarenteed to raise temperatures to dangerous
levels, and should only be attempted by skilled professionals ;-)

Indeed :o).

Best wishes,

Drew
