That's what puzzles me too.
For example, my post to this thread (on January 2) contains a few UTF8
encoded characters, typically на медленн, which I copied from a
Unicode document. On our system, they are displayed as... well, as above.
However, when I view the same mail via Google with Firefox on a Windows 7
computer, this orcish curse appears to be replaced by the original cyrillic
text! Magically, at least for me, because I didn't add any encoding
information.
