In retrospect, I think installing Sp2 was really when the rot set in.

As suggested up-thread, an obvious thing to try would be to install
more RAM. I recently did some work on my sister's 2001 vintage Windows
PC, and it only had 256MB installed. Unfortunately, the maximum amount
of RAM the motherboard can take is 512MB, so her next purchase will be
a new PC, although the 512MB improved the performance noticeably.

I would recommend at least 1GB; my own PC's performance improved
markedly with that amount of memory.

This may seem like an obvious question, but why does any computer need
'at least' 1GB (1,024MB, 1,048,576KB) of RAM to even attain a usable
speed? Is Windows actually that inefficient? By RISC OS standards,
that is a *lot* of memory. This Iyonix has 512MB fitted, and even that
is astonishing overkill (memory leakage in recent NetSurf development
builds aside), with the Task Manager currently reporting 447,904KB free.

My RiscPC has 17MB, and chugs along quite happily at its 33MHz (or
whatever), as it has been since 1995 or so.

What is Windows doing with it all?

(cue viscious drucking...)
