Slight aside to te main thrust of this thread ATM.

Fay has asked me to ask.

She has a couple of very close friend in the USA and Canada who send
her region 1 DVDs as prezzies (Things she's been looking for but
can't get in R2 versions) Obviously play on the computer, but not to
the TV DVD player.

1) Anywhere in the UK she can purchase a region 1 DVD Player, that
actually is R1 and not something that after purchase requires some
half arsed hack, that sometimes works and quite often doesn't.

The thing to do is to check any of the numerous software region hack
sites that will tell you (by manufacturer and model) what the hack (if
any) for a particular recorder is, and us it to fid a recorder that has
the spec you want at a sensible price. If you look in the "customer's
comments" section of sites like Amazon you will often find what the
hack is.

Really, these hacks aren't "half arsed", and they do work. I'm now on
my 4th DVD player (1st HD/DVD recorder), I've s/w hacked all of
them[1], and I've never had any problems setting up the player to the
region of my choice.

The main thing that can mean a s/w hack not work is if you try to play
an ERC(?) disc on a player that has been hacked to region 0 - ERC discs
need a player to have a region code set. Hence, avoid all the machines
that yu can only hack to region 0 (again, the hack sites make it pretty
obvious whether a particular hack will allow you to select the region
of your choice, or only allow region 0).

2) Failing that know of somewhere that'll make the hardware mods
required to fix a DVD player as region 1?

Loads of places. Just grab a copy of one of the many relevant monthlies
(e.g Home Cinema) and check out the ads - you'll find plenty.

[1] I watch a lot of anime on DVD, the vast majority of which are
US imports, so I know whereof I speak.
