have never worked out what brings about this behaviour.

There's a bug in XP that causes this when you are using the default
'Shared Documents' folder as shown in 'My Computer'.

If you create your own folder (eg. C:\SharedDocs) and share it, you
will be able to use it in the normal way.

hmm.
1. does this also apply to all subdirectories within Shared Documents?

2. i see the behaviour (of failing to update directory display) also
when working entirely on the laptop. ie, i'm not talking about it
happening particularly when accessing a Windows directory via Lanman.
is that also due to this same bug?

(it's particularly noticeable when you create a new directory and
nothing seems to happen, so you do it again a couple of times in
frustration, then at last close the directory and reopen it (till it
occurs to you that Ctrl-R would have refreshed it) and then see about
six new directories that you have to delete.)

3. and why is it that sometimes i can, and sometimes i cannot, DELETE
an XP directory from the RISC OS side? even if i have (repeatedly)
specified in the Windows settings for the directory that it and all
its children should allow themselves to be changed from elsewhere on
the network? is this another manifestation of the Shared Documents
bug you mention?

(my inelegant workaround has been to rename such an undeletable
directory by adding XXXX to its name, as a reminder to myself to
exterminate it next time i look at it from the Windows side.)
