Last night I copied the whole Pluto application including article and

I take it you performed a repair/compact within Pluto on the new setup -
just to be sure you haven't carried the errors across with you? (You've
mentioned doing it before, so I'd guess you probably did - but it's worth
asking.)
so I think this rules out anything discknight could have fixed.
Subject to the above, yes.
So it looks as if a program file within Pluto has become corrupt or there
is something wrong with the emails themselves. Is there any sense where
messages can appear to Pluto to be of a different size to what they
actually are? If not it looks like I shall have to install a new Pluto and
take it from there. Re reading my first message I realise that I didn't
say or probably at that time hadn't noticed that the corrupt messages all
come from the same source, the results of an online form.
Perhaps it's worth looking a selection of these messages in detail to see if
a possible connection/cause can be identified.
Send a handful to me as (in full, ie with the headers intact) if you like
and I'll have a play - and, in particular, to see if the same behaviour is
exhibited in my copy of Pluto. Export them as a single file as they would
appear in a raw news download - which I think Pluto might call "#! rnews
format" IIRC - and, if necessary, edit the file in your text editor to
remove any confidential information. Zip it up, and attach it to an email.
