That's a valid comment, and the distinction would be useful for voice
synthesised page readers. But what if you're saving a DTP document as
HTML? DTP/WP software (pre-XML) knows about angle and weight. The
fonts we have have bold and italic (or oblique) versions. You can't
tell without understanding the context whether Italic means emphasised
or cited or whatever. Making the assumption that Italics means
emphasised is unsafe: keeping Italics as Italics is safe.
You're missing another point. The stylesheets you use to control the
presentation of your WP/DTP text merely have to be converted to CSS to have
the equivalent affect on the HTML version.
