No, it was never possible to fix Thump like that because it only
creates its DA when displaying images, so it is likely to always be at
the highest address.
It's extremely contrived, but until a proper fix is found, you could get
Thump to display a small file immediately on start-up, then stop Thump
from releasing its images DA by always keeping that image displayed,
perhaps on an otherwise unused WorkSpace screen.
It might be worth it, since allowing Thump to display thumbnails for a
directory containing one of the problematic files produces a situation
requiring a full reset of the machine. However, it's not for the faint
hearted.
