If you have USB on your machine, i.e. Iyonix and A9home have onboard
or a Unipod for RPC, you can print via USB. I only have experience
with the Simtec USB. This is achieved by setting up Printing to File
from within Printers. My first attempts at printing via my
Photosmart's built in network port failed. I have not revisited that
since, as I purchased it primarily for scanning.

Network printing now working
This is something I'd have to read about assuming it's in the user
guide.

What do you do with file subsequently? Simply save it to the USB
iconbar icon?

I do not get what you mean here. The printer/scanner scans in the
item and saves it to the usb stick. I am then able to plug in the
USB stick into my RISC OS computer and transfer the images to my local
hdd.

I meant the printing side. You drag the file to the USB icon?

Well, the more possibilities there are for using off-the-shelf
solutions for scanning and printing the better for RISC OS!

I intend to write a review of this printer and my experience of with
RISC OS for the Qercus magazine. Will hopefully appear in either the
next issue or the one after.

That should be useful as it could affirm what is the scanning solution
for RISC OS. The way it looks is that the solution is in fact not a
direct one if you are saving to memory stick. Having said that though,
with these all in one scanner/printers isn't scanning becoming partly
computer independent if you can monitor the scan and save without a
computer attached?

Can I ask - do you think I have a good chance of getting a similar
save-to-memory-stick scanner working with a USB RISC OS machine?
I don't see why not. Argos do a 16 day money back offer. If it does
not work you can always get a refund.

Which RISC OS machine are you using? It could be worth checking with
their respective mailing list for advice on a suitable memory stick.

RPC with 6.06.

There's a HP one in Argos for under £40 which offers:

- Compatible with: SD/MM Card, Compact Flash, Memory Stick, Memory
Stick Duo, xD Picture Card.

- 1200 x 2400 dpi scan resolution.

- 48-bit colour.
Don't get to hyped up with the stated dpi. If you read the small
print, the maximum dpi is when used in conjunction with the supplied
HP software. Just installed mine on to the my XP box. Full install
to 1Gb!
Thanks - the trouble is the small print is often inside the box ;-)

These the same SD cards you can use with cameras presumably? So all
I'd need on top of this is?

- SD card or memory stick (are these generic?)
Yes. Although not all memory sticks may work with RISC OS. Ensure
whichever one you get can be returned/exchanged for a different brand.
Saying that I have had no problems with the ones I have tried in the
past.
If I get a multicard reader, there should be a good chance of it being
able to read one of the above on RISC OS.

- card reader (presumably they come with USB cable)

Same applies as above

If that looks feasible then it seems a very good deal for scanning on
RISC OS doesn't it?

I have found the solution more than adequate.

Thanks.

Andrew
