There's a "Hibernate" option on XP which memorises where you're at, so
that when you switch on again, all windows and apps are as you left them.

Is there such a thing for RISC OS?

There used to be an app called Freeze but I don't know if it is still
being developed.

I'm sure the guy's was called Gus and lived in Greece.

Kostas Proitsakis, a.k.a. GUS of Arm's Tech, wrote Freeze which was
shareware and ran on Risc PCs up to and including RISC OS 4. He
released a fully registered version for free when he could no longer
continue maintaining. The sources were also released at the same time
as well as those for Wacky-Talky and Mark Rowan was hosting them at
<URL:http://www.tamias.co.uk> but I am unable to reach that site. The
latest version I have was 1.60 (January 2001).

Freeze allowed you to save the machine state to disc and then resume
it afterwards. It had exceptions for a number of programs that needed
to save their data to disc first to prevent potential corruption. It
was handy if you wanted to shut the machine down but be able to carry
on from where you left off (much like the familiar Hibernate) but also
to allow you to save the state of your machine immediately after boot
so you could speed its startup.

I was also using a number of Wacky-Talky components still when I was
running Select on my Risc PC. If I still have the original archives
around and Mark Rowan's site is not available, I may find a home for
them.

You don't have to go home but you can't stay here.
