You could try PrintSpool (see sig.). I don't know if it would help in
this case but it might.

Thanks. That intercepts the print and releases control of the computer
back but the printer does nothing except flash indefinitely :-(

Weird. If the print doesn't finish you can try 'Stop and Requeue' over
the queue line. If you then release the 'Hold all prints' button the
print will be sent again and might now work. If that fails it would
suggest the initial print is created incorrectly rather than it being the
first transfer that is failing. If that's the case then remove the print
from the queue and recreate the print (from the same source) and see if
that works. If nothing works then switch on logging and send me the
results of trying to print (Show>Log from iconbar menu).
